I really love and appreciate that you’re articulating this. I’ve taken on facilitation of some dialoguing spaces that were founded with the original title of “safe space,” and have always shifted the name, but then made an explicit statement of the purpose of the group being to /practice/ cultivating the skills for social and psychological safety within the community at hand.
That distinction makes a huge difference.
I also love the focus you’ve given to nonlinearity as well as not throwing the nascent baby paradigm shift out with the bath water. Grateful to have your voice and nuance and discernment in the field.
The distinction between being and becoming a safe space, just like between being and becoming in right relationship. In dialogues I intent to center the becoming without negating the being. Nonlinearity is vital for that. It also means acknowledging that we are all sometimes falling into the ‘trap’. I sure did, and I know I frequently crash back into solutionism and linearity (often when I struggle to cope), in those moments I am deeply grateful to all who point at the dynamics instead of leaving me in my perceived cushioned safety. The practice of getting from perceived safety to safety as a verb is one way have to cary together.
